Pantalica and the Anapo valley — Itinerario in scooter

You leave the sea behind and climb inland, into the Iblei. Pantalica is a necropolis of more than five thousand tombs cut into the rock face between the 13th and the 8th century BC, a UNESCO site, hanging above the Anapo valley. There is no ticket and there is almost nobody: only the road climbing, the canyon below and the caves in front of you.

• Ferla and Sortino, two baroque towns off the usual routes

• Entry is free. The access points to the Anapo valley open around 7:00-8:30 and close about an hour and a half before sunset.
• On the Sortino side there are gates, on the Ferla side there are none: after bad weather the gates stay shut for the next 2-3 days as well, and there is no way of knowing beforehand short of going.
• From Sortino take the SP11 Sortino-Pantalica for about 6 km to the end, where you leave the vehicle.
• The access roads are narrow, with gravel at the edges: on a scooter you go slowly.
• There is no phone coverage everywhere, and there are no bars: bring water and lunch.
