Rental terms
What you need in order to rent, how much the deposit is, what the insurance covers and what happens in case of damage.
Everything that governs your rental: requirements, deposit, coverage, cancellations and use of the vehicle.
Subject of the contract
- These General Rental Conditions (GRC) govern the contractual relationship between Ortigia Rent S.r.l. ("the Lessor") and the Customer renting a vehicle from the fleet.
- The contract takes effect on signature of the handover form and prevails, in case of conflict, over any differing clauses in the online booking.
- The Customer declares that they have read, understood and fully accepted the GRC at the time of booking.
Driver requirements
- A valid identity document (ID card or passport).
- A driving licence valid for the vehicle category, shown in original at pick-up.
- A credit card in the main driver’s name for the deposit pre-authorisation.
- Minimum age and licence categories for each vehicle: see the table below.
Rates and payment methods
- All rates published on the site include VAT at 22%.
- The 20% deposit is charged on online confirmation; the balance is due when the vehicle is collected.
- Accepted payments: Visa, Mastercard, American Express, debit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Klarna. Bank transfer is available for rentals over 7 days with 5 working days’ notice.
- A 5% online discount is applied automatically to bookings made on ortigiarentsiracusa.it.
Security deposit
- The deposit is pre-authorised on the credit card at pick-up and released within 7 days of the return if there is no damage.
- Amounts: see the table below. With Super Plus coverage the deposit can be reduced to zero.
- The deposit is not available to spend: it stays held until it is released.
Insurance and excess
- All vehicles carry statutory unlimited third-party liability cover, plus theft and fire.
- Standard coverage carries an excess in the event of an accident or damage to the vehicle (see the table).
- The excess can be reduced or removed with Super or Super Plus coverage, which can be added when booking or at pick-up.
- Coverage lapses in case of drink-driving, driving under the influence of drugs, breaches of the Highway Code, driving on unpaved roads or tracks, or use of the vehicle by a driver not named on the contract.
Changes and cancellations
- Changes to dates, times and pick-up location are always free, subject to availability.
- To cancel, contact us at info@ortigiarentsiracusa.it or on WhatsApp; see the refund timeline below.
- In case of a no-show without notice, 100% of the deposit is retained.
Pick-up and return
- The vehicle must be returned to the branch and at the time stated in the contract, with the same fuel level as at pick-up (normally full).
- Late-return tolerance: 30 minutes, after which an extra rental day is charged.
- Return with a lower fuel level: the cost of refuelling plus a €15 service fee is charged.
- Extraordinary cleaning (heavily soiled inside or outside): charged between €30 and €100.
- Returning in a different town from the pick-up point is possible with a transfer surcharge, agreed when booking.
Use of the vehicle
- The vehicle may be driven only by the main driver and by any additional drivers named on the contract.
- Prohibited uses: races, competitions, driving lessons, transport of dangerous goods, subletting to third parties.
- Taking the vehicle outside Italy without the Lessor’s written authorisation is prohibited.
- Unlimited mileage within Italy.
- Fines and administrative penalties are the Customer’s responsibility; a €25 handling fee is charged for each notification.
- 50cc scooters may not use major out-of-town roads, motorways or ring roads.
Accidents and assistance
- In case of an accident: fill in the European accident statement immediately, photograph the damage and call the emergency number on the contract.
- Free roadside assistance is included within 35 km of the pick-up branch.
- Assistance not caused by the customer’s negligence is free. Otherwise the call-out costs are charged.
- In case of total or partial theft: report it to the authorities within 24 hours and give a copy to the Lessor.
Jurisdiction and applicable law
- This contract is governed by Italian law.
- The Court of Syracuse has exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute.
- Consumers enjoy the protections of the Italian Consumer Code (Legislative Decree 206/2005).
